Geography at Buxworth Primary School
Through the creative curriculum, we aim to cover and go beyond the statutory requirements of the new National Curriculum (2014) for Geography, over a two-year cycle. Our Geography lessons will deepen children’s understanding of their locality and the wider world. They will investigate people, places and the environment in the United Kingdom and abroad and start to make links between different places in the world. We will help our children to acquire the skills they need to read maps and we will encourage a responsible attitude to the world and its resources.
Curriculum Threads:
- From Reception to Year 6, children develop their contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes.
- Children learn to understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world. They learn how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time.
- Children are developing their geographical skills needed in order to collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork.
- Children interpret a range of sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- Children learn to communicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length
